Pokémon loose in the Library!
Did you know that the Spokane Public Library branches are Pokéstops in Pokémon Go?
Since the app launched last week, it is quickly growing to be one of the most downloaded apps across the United States.
Now you can catch some of your favorite Pokémon right at your local library!
The next time you visit our collection or help a friend or relative sign up for a library card, be sure to keep Pokémon Go open and your eyes peeled for Pokémon lurking among the stacks. Be on the lookout for lures at each of the libraries to maximize your catches!

Ferris High School art installation at the Downtown Library
Have you stopped by the Downtown Library lately? There’s an exhibit you won’t want to miss.
The first year art students at Ferris High school have been working under the direction of their teacher, Lissa Robison, for the past month on a unit about Refugees. Ferris High School has a Newcomers Program where refugees and others who are new to our country spend their first 6 months on the Ferris campus. This means Ferris students are walking amongst many who have just fled their country and have experienced great trauma.
Students spent time to better understand the refugee experience through a lesson about the Syrian conflict, hands-on experience about the life of a refugee, student-run discussions, and a talk by a fellow student who is a refugee from Sudan. After diving deep into the subject, students were then asked to reflect and create a piece of art about the refugee experience.
Each student created an original piece of artwork on a piece of canvas that was then sewn together to make a large quilt-like tarp that covers a structure made to mimic a refugee tent from a refugee camp. The viewer must walk inside the tent to view the artwork. The newcomers were also invited to participate and they each made a piece about their experience being displaced, focusing specifically on the objects they did bring with them or the object they wish they would have brought with them from their country.
The results are stunning as these 100 students put their hearts into their work and made meaningful and compassionate artwork. Stop by the Downtown Library through the month of July to see the students’ artwork.
Author Talk: Tim and Becky Hattenburg
A riveting account of the 1937 ambush and killing of Mike and Frieda Kuntz in eastern Montana and the attempted murder of their five-year-old son, Larry, who witnessed the murders. An amazing story of survival and the ability of the human spirit to transcend unspeakable cruelty.
Larry Kuntz, the subject of the book Death Ride, is a local resident of Spokane. Learn more about him and other characters as well as the extensive research for their book from authors Tim and Becky Hattenburg at the Downtown Library, Tuesday, July 26th at 6:30pm.
